Intensive Care

With a staff-to-patient ratio of at least 1:1, Wylye ward in our Hospital provides round-the-clock level three intensive care for patients with high-dependency and complex neurological medical and nursing needs.

These may include patients requiring ventilatory support, those in a coma, Persistent Vegetative State (PVS), Minimally Conscious (MC) or with ‘locked-in’ syndrome caused as a result of a spinal chord injury (SCI), catastrophic brain injury or other neurological condition.

Full respiratory support and management is provided under the direction of a Consultant in Rehabilitation Medicine with support from an Intensive Care Specialist.  Subject to assessment, ventilator and tracheostomy weaning can be facilitated.

Patients may be admitted on to this ward for long-term care or to enable a care package to be designed so that, with appropriate training, the individual can return to the community with continuing care.  Patients that no longer require full ventilatory support may be transferred to one of our high depending care homes on the Glenside Campus.
