Assessment

The ARC
The Glenside Centre for Assessment and Rehabilitation is a fourteen bed unti and is the gateway to our Brain Injury Services Division, with each Service User that is admitted to our services passing through the centre for a period of assessment and then if appropriate, a period of intensive rehabilitation. Following the twelve week assessment, the Service User would either be discharged back to the referring authority or would be transferred to the intensive rehabilitation phase.

The Assessment Phase
The service is designed for two types of Service User groups. Firstly, Service Users who will stay within our service through the pathway and the various stages of rehabilitation prior to a community discharge and secondly, Service Users who are admitted purely for assessment of future and long term needs. This information could then be used, for example, for determining the level of compensation in personal injury claims, or for future Health Authority liability financial planning.

The assessment phase provides an assessment service for young adults who have sustained an acquired or traumatic brain injury, aged from 18 - 55. Placements range from andything up to twelve weeks depending on the individual Service User. During this time, full inter-disciplinary assessments and conducted by the following disciplines; Medical, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Psychiatry, Speech, Language and Social Work as well as other aspects such as optical, hearing, and dental services.

During the assessment phase, pre-defined objectives that have been established with the Service User and their significant others and the inter-disciplinary team are completed. This includes full assessments by all specialist disciplines. The six and ten week placement reviews are centered around this assessment pathway.

Following the assessment phase of placement, Service Users who are to remain within our services are either transferred to the intensive rehabilitation phase for commencement of rehabilitation or, if no rehabilitation potential is identified and offered the opportunity to transfer to our long stay continuing care facility.
